RECENTLY SEPARATED

Case Study #9BOA NOVA TEA HOUSE, by ALVARO SIZA.

short description
-is situated in Porto, Portugal;
-was completed in 1963;
-was noticed in Arquitectura;
-is characterized by structural freedom of interior and BRUtALITY;
-it is unusual for its time for not being fancy or modern in that time's definition;
-but innovative

one approaches the building from the east, while the horizon appears and disappears repetitively. the house is built so that the panoramic view is over the west (the sunset view). when you come into the house, you enter the elevated level and have to descend down the stairs so that you could see the horizon again. Siza's masterpiece continues to teeze its visitors non-stop, from the parking lot to the very restaurant and lounge arrangements.

OPENING

a window in a context.

here are gathered window samples from a very Danish concept- “kolonihave”- allotment - in their variety.
Denmark is one of the few countries in the world, where a window, as a source of light and an opening into a person’s private life, almost always stays disclosed.
a window becomes a delicate way to merge private and public lives together: for instance sitting/eating arrangements from the inside would be moved outside and placed right in front of a window, so that a person sitting outside would still have the overview over both spaces (inner and outer).

here windows (single, double, big, small, shuttered or even non-existing yet, as above) are the focal points set in a certain context.
